DO I NEED AN AUSTRALIAN DRIVERS LICENSE?

Wanting to drive in Australia during your travels? If so, it’s a great way of getting around to see all the amazing spots Australia has to offer, especially those secluded locations that are more difficult to find! Our favourite way to explore this beautiful country definitely has to be 4WD with rooftop tents, camping in spots with some crazy views. We can promise you, it’s worth it!

If you hold a current and valid overseas drivers license, no matter which state or territory you’re in within Australia there is a grace period where you’re legally able to drive using that license before needing to transfer over to an Australian license, but this is only for a short period of time - usually up to 3 months. It is important to check the requirements depending on what state you’re based in, as each region’s regulations slightly differ. On this page we give you a rundown of the different processes in the different states and how to convert your license over if you’re planning on staying longer than 3 months.

If your current international drivers license is not in English, you will need to either get an international driving permit (IDP) or and English translation of it, this can be done by a NAATI accredited translator. An IDP is valid for 12 months unless your driver’s license expires first. See website for more information on this process.

An international driving permit is a valid translation document which allows you to drive within a foreign country without the need of further tests and applications. Be sure to always carry this form of documentation whilst driving as failure to present this when asked can result in a penalty/traffic infringement for unlicensed driving. However, this is not a stand alone document and you will still need to carry your national driving license with you aswell.

Victoria

The grace period of driving in Victoria with your international license is 6 months, so if you’re an overseas or interstate license holder and planning on visiting Victoria for longer than this, then you will need to convert you drivers license over to a Victorian one. The type of license you’ll get depends on; how long you have had your license for and how old you are.

If you don’t possess a copy of your international driver’s license then you will need a ‘license verification letter’ which the licensing authority who issued your overseas license can give to you.

In order to convert your license to a Victorian one you’ll need to follow these steps:

  • Download the application form, which you can find on the link below. Fill it out but do not sign yet as you’ll need to sign it in front of a staff member.

  • You’ll need to bring some form of identification; one document from category A and one from category B. One at least one of these documents will need to be proof of address within Victoria.

      • Category A: passport, Immicard, Australian photo driver’s license or learner permit, document for travel to Australia.

      • Category B: pensioner or health care concession card, student ID, credit card or bank account card, Australian proof of age card, bank account statement which is no more than a year old and utility bill that is no more than a year old.

  • If you have a medical condition you will need to go through the medical review process which can be done via VIC roads.

  • You will need to book and pay for your appointment, this can be done either by visiting VicRoads Service Centre, online, or by calling 131171.

  • During your appointment documents will be checked, you’ll sign the application form, an eyesight test will be performed and your photo will be taken for your license card.

  • Lastly, if your application is successful, you will receive a temporary paper license which will be valid until your Victorian license has been delivered to you via mail.

If your international license is not in English, you’ll need to either get an English translation of it or an international driving permit. The translation can be done by the Department of Home Affairs Free Translating Serivce or NAATI Certified translators.
