Buying a campervan for Australia
Sleep, Cook, Drive all from the comfort of your van
Campervans are the most-bought travel vehicle in Australia, and the one travellers most often pick wrong. Too small, and two adults can't sleep in it. Too big, and city driving is a chore and fuel kills the budget. Under converted, and you're regretting the purchase.
After nearly a decade of selling, fitting out, and buying back travel vehicles, here's how we'd think about it, whether you're committing from Europe before your flight, or walking into one our warehouses.
When a campervan is the right call
A campervan does three jobs: it gets you across the country, it's where you sleep, and it's where you eat. That's the appeal, you can park almost anywhere and you've already got a bed.
Pick a campervan if your trip looks like:
A Big Lap or East Coast run on sealed roads, with the occasional unsealed detour into a national park.
3+ months on the road, where the savings on accommodation pay back the buy-in.
Two travellers (or one with a lot of gear) who want to live in the vehicle, not just travel in it.

Which Van type to choose?
βAusSieβ vans
Reliable, easier to find parts and service for, lower buy-in. The default pick for travellers who want a van that just works.
Consider a Toyata HiAce SWB (the most bought campervan in Australia) or the LWB if you value more space.
European vans
Better drive, more refined cabin, higher buy-in. Worth it if you'll spend serious time on the road and want the van to feel less like a work vehicle.
Consider a Volkswagen T5 for a sharper drive, or upgrade to a Volkswagen T6 for updated mechanics and interor.
How to build your van
Inspiration
Some builds weβre proud of
Tim
Tim is travelling with his partner, so wanted a larger kitchen space with running water. Our advanced drawer fit the bill perfectly. He also wanted to make the internal space bigger, so we fitted a swivel passenger seat.
Noe
Noe had a very Australian request, βI need to store my surf board insideβ. βEasy!β, we said. Noe opted for the Luffare pull-out bed kit which makes walk-through space in the vehicle. He opted for our standard kitchen drawer which comes with storage and gas burner. He went with a carpeted interior, and a roof fan for ventilation.
Claudia
Built for the tracks campervans can't handle: the Outback, Cape York, the Gibb River Road. Popular for longer adventure routes. The true Aussie adventurer.
Why buyers choose BCA
Most second-hand vans on the open market are unconverted, untested, or both. You only find out which after you've handed over the cash. We do things a bit differently at BCA to ensure your safety and your satisfaction.
We handle everything in-house. Our mechanics are in-house, they check your vehicle. Our cabinet fitters are in-house, they build your vehicle. We have five warehouses across Australia that in a worst case scenario can help you. No dodgy communication between mechanics.
Our checks are thorough. We have a warranty on all vehicles we sell. Many Facebook Marketplace or private vehicles look good, but have issues you donβt see. Our checks ensure we donβt buy any vehicle we wouldnβt drive ourselves.
The fit-out is already done, and it's modular. Every BCA van comes with a Luffare conversion kit fitted before pickup. Bed, pull-out kitchen module, drawers, what ever you need. The kit is modular, if a component needs replacing or upgrading mid-trip, you swap the module rather than rebuild the van.
The buy-back is in the contract. The price BCA will pay you back at the end of the trip is agreed in writing before you pay the deposit. No private buyers, no Gumtree photos at 11 pm in Cairns, no two-week dead time before your flight home

Pre-purchase
Buying before you arrive in Australia?
A lot of our customers lock in their vehicle from Europe before they fly. We take a deposit to reserve your vehicle, handle the paperwork, and have it ready when you land.
